In this presentation the results on 3D-simulations will be reported for a number of heterogeneous materials with different kinds of internal interfaces (i.e. polycrystalline aluminium alloys, metal matrix composites, porous ceramics, and a coal piece with initially presenting cracks).

A mesoscale 3D-analysis of deformation and fracture processes under dynamic and quasistatic loading will be provided, including phenomena of strain localization, stress concentration near interfaces, micro-cracking and the interrelation of meso- and macro-scale processes.

Special attention will be dedicated to the development of fracture model and investigation of crack initiation and propagation in the aluminum-alumina composite and coal test-pieces in tension and compression. A specific role of the free surface in processes of plastic shear nucleation and crack initiation will be discussed for the materials in question.
