Predominantly, the business BayGenetics is concerned with the production of proteins for the food as well as the organic technologic / pharmaceutical industry by dint of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. The proteins are applied in the production of e.g. detergents or the fabrication of groceries like clarification of fruit juice or cheese production. In this business unit, a production system could be developed, which is unique for this organism concerning the yield. Further business segments are the development of vaccines as well as enzyme catalysts based on Bacillus subtilis.
BayGenetics GmbH is a spin-off from the University of Bayreuth and was founded by Professor Dr. Wolfgang Schumann as well as the microbiologist Dr. Markus Helfrich and the chemist Dr. Gunter Festel in May 2008.
Intra-team of founders, Mr. Dr. Festel takes on the role as so-said “Founding Angel”. The principle of “Founding Angels” is a sponsorship of interesting business concepts yet before the foundation of an enterprise. At this, the dedication strictly occurs without any payment for a significant shareholding of equity. In return, a sizeable dedication occurs in the business sector as well as in the utilization of the network “Founding Angels”.
Next to the description of the business, the technological platform and the particular applications, the lecture will also contain an insight into the principle of business formation by dint of a “Founding Angel”, which is conferrable to other business formations as well.
